Toilet post#15

Further to my previous post , here's the washroom. As per it's main entrance and building, the space within was just as impressive.

Pity the floor was icky wet and a stronger air deodoriser would be most appreciated.

De Chiengmai Thai Seafood Restaurant, Sungai Buloh

I first came across this place here. My interest was piqued. My friends doomed. What else but was on a mission to pester left right center to form a makan group to this place. It was tough because the designated driver is aware of the roads there being under massive construction which means nightmarish jams and confusing. Finally managed to gather 4.

Cannot recall the time we left KL but there was still light. Traffic crawled on most roads followed by getting lost in the mess on the Sungai Buloh main road. Twice. Once we overshot a turning so we had to go a long way before a u-turn was possible, second time we turned back on a relatively small kampung (village) road, we had no confidence in going further, which turned out to lead to the restaurant. Tummies grumbling, people blaming. Oh, what a fun ride.

Nightfall, we arrived to this:-
Impressive huh. That's the best part.

Oh, the food? Not worth the hassle. But since I took pictures, let's not waste them. We had these:-

Som Tam (Young Papaya Salad). Bland.
Kerabu Pauh. Bland.Tomyam Gong (Prawns in Hot & Sour Soup). Possible once dehydrated sands of salt will appear.Pandan Chicken. 1st picture shows the minuscule pieces wrapped in pandanus leaves while the following was when it's unwrapped to be nibbled (small piece-mar).Stir Fried Green Vegetables (Kailan) with Garlic and Salted FishDeep Fried Squids (but listed as 'udang' ie. prawns) in Batter. Lucky the chilli sauce helped.Green Chicken Curry. Watery with few tough pieces of meat.Thai Style Fried Rice. First Thai restaurant we came across that do not have Pineapple Fried Rice.Steamed White Rice. Came in individually steamed metal bowls.Free parking on it's ample grounds but please note that there is no free plain water available as they only serve bottled water.

Unsatisfactory (to us but certainly not to most as the tables were full) meal cost:-Address & Contact:-

Brinchang night market.

The Brinchang pasar malam has always been one of the more happening spots in Cameron Highlands come weekend nights. Food, clothing, toys, accessories and more food bring tourists from all over the place to this spot. So big that the authorities have to move the night market away from its previous spot, at the car park in front of the shop houses where you'll find a Secret Recipe outlet and several popular steamboat restaurants.

After some home-cooked dinner, we decided to get out and get some snack; what better place than a nightmarket to get foooooood oh glorious food. Parking was tough, especially during long holiday seasons but heck, you'll just have to turn a few rounds and be patient.

The first stall we went to sold sea coconut, mangosteen and durian. The sea coconut however, came in 2 forms, the raw sea coconut in its fruit itself and the common cold drink in a cup. Wanna see how it looks like? Here it is....

From the top of the fruit, only 3 small sections hold the flesh of the sea coconut. Remove it and you'll be able to scoop the flesh out. This is a FIRST for me, though we've all had sea coconut but i doubt many have seen it in its original form.
And when you're done, you can actually bring the shell home and turn it into your very own Halloween Sea Coconut....
We also tried the sea coconut drink, much more or less the same like the ones in KL.
And here's the "pak cik" who owns the stall in action.
Next up, chocolate strawberries mien... I don't know but i just don't fancy it. Marshmallows are great but strawberries? Me no like it very much, me still prefer strawberries the way they are.
I've always been a sucker for apam baliks, apoms and etc.... this one has got great aroma, hooking me up ala Homer Simpson style to a leg of ham. This one's kinda dry though, but those who love it with coconut will dig this.

This was my favourite stall, the one that sells dim sum, lovely food for a cold and chilly night like this. One thing that scares me is that siew mai was pretty big in size, much bigger than the ones here in KL. Could it be made from human flesh?..... Nevermind, makan first.....

Here we have the sweet potato balls. Remembered that these used to be super stuffed with sweeto potato but now, it's more commercialised here and it's fast becoming sweeto flour balls... only flour and sugar are used to make these.... disappointed....

And heres a view of the night market.... a must for travellers during weekends..unless you don't like crowded places like my dad.

Lovely experience, but even if i reside here, don't think i fancy coming here every weekend unless i'm super duper bored and there's a need to see some fresh faces around.

Tummy rating: 6.2/10..... but the holiday there was nice....

Ocen Seafood Restaurant, Tanjung Sepat

One of those impromptu outstation trip just for dinner. 2 cars 6 pax. Destination Tanjung Sepat, a fishing village after Teluk Batik for the obvious - seafood.

Journey started at 4pm. Arrived at 6pm. See? Still in bright daylight and we thought we were early. Nay. There was already a crowd waiting for available tables! There was no queue system. Was told to just stand or sit around the area and they supposed to call once there's a table available. You mean they can recognise us and know when is our rightful turn? Sceptical, right? We checked thrice (once in Cantonese, once in Mandarin and lastly in Hokkien) with the much harrassed looking man-boss, lady-boss, staff and almost anyone who has a minute for us. Make that a second. Yup. That's the no-system system. Take it or leave it. We did think of trying another outlet just next door but it was quite empty. (-_-)" Since we did travel far for this, the majority of us voted to wait it out.

There was narrow jetty next to the restaurant where most patrons were killing time walking up and down while locals sat fishing. We did have plenty of time so we ...
Blur? Good. It was done on purpose. As usual, I did not ask for their permission to showcase their faces here. Just to make it a tad difficult for people to recognise them unless those who already knew them. In any case, they are single & available! (In the event there's no more comment or posting after such an announcement, yes, I'm in hiding.)

First picture on the top left is the view of the restaurant from the jetty. Next to it is the restaurant's main entrance from the road. Bottom two are respectively the concrete section and the wooden plank part which is further away from shore.

We waited and waited until ..
Finally, we decided the no-system system is not working. Desperate time calls for desperate measure. We employed the stand closely by tables which were at the end of their meals tactic. Bet most of you are familiar with it. No? Not Malaysian is it?

It worked like a charm.
For the effort, we were rewarded with these:-

Fresh Coconut Drinks.
Not too old, not too young. Ahhhhh.. sweet and fragrant.
Lemon Chicken. One of us is not really a seafood fan so this was to pacify him. Surprisingly, this was good.
Claypot Drunken Prawns. Err.. boss, more wine? We may look young but trust me, are of legal age d. =P
Boiled Baby Squids. Al-dente and went very well with the chilli sauce provided.
Oyster omelette. An apparently frequent patron advised us to request to have the oysters on top of the fried eggs. He claimed it will taste better. Verdict:- We didn't finish this dish. =(
Fried fish. I cannot recall what the fish was but it was small and sweet. Just ask and the boss will recommend it. It is one of their best sellers. Although deep fried in light batter, it did not toughen nor dry the meat. I was happily munching on the pieces whole when friends informed that there were actually small bones intact. No, that did not stop me. Crunch crunch crunch.
Choy-tam (Brussels sprouts?) Stir-fried with Garlic
When we ordered, crabs finished. When we were about to settle the bill, harrased boss told us that fresh crabs arrived. *Haiz* Overall, the taste was alright except for the fried fish which was muacks muacks muacks. Most seafood finished at about 9pm and late arrivals had to be turned away. The harrassed boss started to smile and went on chatty mode then. He mentioned that the crowd is thick on most days but that day (1/5/2007, a public holiday), it was a mob, hence his queue 'no-system' system failed. Also boasted that if everyday's business is so crazy, he'll opt to close shop and do something less stressful!

Dinner bill (minus petrol and toll and time and stress fighting for table):-
Address & contact:- Sorry, no map on namecard and I am a directions-cum-map-drawing illiterate. Do call the boss for directions.
Oh, just for info, I'll be away to The Land of Roadside Skewered Food for the next 3 days! Wheeee!!!

Max! Kitchen & Wines, Kuala Lumpur

5 June 2009 Update: Saw a notice outside the closed restaurant stating that they have moved to somewhere around Jalan Imbi (I think). I'll take down the particulars next time. Sorry for the incomplete info. Was in a hurry. =P
My Sunday dinner companions were quite mad at me. Initial reason, I was raving and raving nonstop about this place (some say like mosquito). Secondly, we went with great anticipation to have darkness greet us. Twice. Thirdly, they found out I have never ate there. All the raving was based on blogs. They were not angry because I am merely echoing other people's opinions but because I did not read in detail so as to realise the restaurant closes on Sundays. -_-"

Then came our dear new Agong to the rescue. It was during the public holiday declared on 26/4/2007 to commemorate his installation as our 13th Yang di-Pertuan Agong that gave me a chance to redeem myself.

On my (ahem) recommendations, our table was weighed down with these:-

Fresh Fruit Juices.
Iced Cappucinos. As good as it looked.Fresh loaves with Olive Oil & Balsamic Vinegar. We requested for butter and asked for seconds. Good start.Charred Portobello Mushroom. Pretty plump ones.Yabbies Lobster & Shellfish Bisque. My order. Wise order. *pat self*2 orders of US Sea Scallops with Balsamic Reduction. Supposedly a shared order. But I fished the most off one plate. Well worth the scowls the others gave me.2 orders of Shiraz Braised Wagyu Beef Cheeks. Err.. we preferred those from Ninja Jones Japanese Restaurant at Northpoint, Midvalley.Lemon Butter Poached Cod Fish Fillet. Friend was guarding this tightly. ;)Duck Breast, Oven Roasted. Too ducky for me but Phitoy whacked it happily.Warm Varlhona Chocolate Souffle with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream. I took half portion. Yummy.Crisp Kataifi Pastry Wrapped Strawberry with Passion Fruit - Coconut Ice Cream. My personal order. *another self pat*Note:
My pictures do not do justice to the presentation of the dishes. See? All appeared to be in the same dark brown tones. *Haiz* As mentioned before, I suck at taking pictures in dim lighting as I detest using the flash. =(

Frankly, I did not particularly enjoy the mains except for the scallops (nothing can possibly go wrong with scallops for me) as much as the desserts. Maybe it was due to the stuffed nose I was plagued with or maybe due my tastebuds being more at home with stronger flavours. As expected the others enjoyed it immensely. 2 of them even complimented me on the dishes recommendation and patted my back for choosing a great restaurant. 1 of them bought my meal! A happy holiday is definitely made of these.

A heartiest thank you, fellow floggers!

Our bill:-

The address & map (from namecard):-

Oh, do note that this restaurant is super flogger friendly. Snap all you want and the proprietor cum master chef will be more than happy to answer any enquiries. When I was there, Max insisted that I should check out Precious Pea's blog. Hey Max, Pea & I are already like this *intertwined index & middle finger*, k. Nope he didn't fall for it, so no free dessert. =P

Restoran SKG, Tanah Rata.

Cameron Highlands has always been about food, sleep and jalan-jalan. I first went to this place back in 1991 when i was 14, and at that time, it was really cold, day and night. Thanks to the growth of modern concrete jungles in the name of development, my last trip to Camerons was at best, a chilly one as i could walk around in shirt n' shorts.
I've been to Cameron's quite a number of times already, and it's safe to say that i've tried most of the good food places. This one though, really slipped me and my dad. A local lad, good pal of my dad recommended this place to us at Tanah Rata.
Restoran SKG is in Tanah Rata, but from the main road, you'll need to turn left before a row of shops at your right that houses Bank Pertanian and the Pasar Tani during the weekends. Once in, head straight until you see a lil' signboard that reads Restoran SKG. You would have passed a few resort bungalows on your left and right. This place was previously a health spa but as the business wasn't that good, the new owners turned it into a restaurant with a lil' nursery and a strawberry farm at the back. Interesting.
There were 9 of us but with 3 kids, we opted for the RM 138 set, complete with 7 dishes and a bowl of seaweed soup. Where to find such prices in KL mien?
The pot of Chinese Tea was also BIG, a size i've not seen in KL or maybe i'm kinda "jachoon"lar.. but check this out mien...
Kenny here's a basketball player and his hands are definitely much bigger than the average Joe's.
Here comes the soup. Sorry for the mess for the rain's made the night much colder than we expected, hence, some of the seaweed didn't make it to the bowl. The soup was pretty nice, with pieces of pork, egg, tofu and chilies in it. Not THAT special but anything soupy and steaming hot's gotta be a blessing in a night like this.
Asam prawns came. It certainly looked like curry prawns but it had some Tom-Yam-like kick and my favourite spice, thinly sliced, julienned lemongrass... and contrary to the popular belief that seafood at high altitude places are seldom fresh, the prawns here were reeeeeaaallly tender, and you can even de-shell the prawn with your chopstick and spoon.

The mixed vege was a normal affair, since you get so much vege here but somehow your unconcscious self tells you that it's fresher and crispier here.. so EAT more..
This is the tofu, which to my slight disappointment didn't come in a claypot.. coz i've always enjoyed to fu in claypot, besides its obvious benefit of sustaining warmth much longer. Still, it was great, coz the gravy had very little starch in it.
Pork RIBS! My fav... Need to say more? It was nice but we got a lil' hint of "marmite" in it, so i guess this "King of Pork Ribs" dish is equavalent to our "Marmite ribs" here in KL.
Next up, the pork trotter. Absolute killer as we had no less than 5 people who ought to stay away from fatty foods... You all don't tell my mom ya.....
Curry fish head... perfect for a night like this, the gravy served us in soo many ways - gravy, dipping and soup.... wish i brought some bread along.
And not forgetting, the Four heavenly Kings staring Andy Lau LONG BEANS, Jacky Cheung BRIN-JAL, Aaron Kwok PE-TAI and Leon LADIES' FINGER Lai. The lady boss said, "this is our version of this Four Heavenly Kings" but i was dumbfounded after my first spoonful.."Got difference meh?... Still, it was a nice dish which COULD have been better with some pork lard pieces on it...
And the aftermath...... wait.. we still went back to our unit for more mahjong, PSP, steamed corns, Kit Kat, barley with ginkgo and sweet potatoes. Now i really need to strap my U-Zap to work....

PRICE: RM 138.. inclusive of rice and that BIG pot of tea
My Tummy rating: 8.8/10.

The Ship, Pertama Complex

It was a rainy evening with promise of flooding in certain unfortunate areas around our Garden City of Lights. But since Phitoy insisted he needs to replenish his supply of shuttlecocks (no, not a dealer, just a player who's super particular about the condition of all the contraptions of the game involved), we went to his usual sport shop, housed in Pertama Complex. When we were done, found that the sky was just beginning to throw a huge tantrum and traffic was horrendous. What to do? Do dinner-lor.

Long time never been in any of its branches so we thought it's a good time to revisit The Ship. Upon entering, we decided it is prime time they refurbish and renovate. The air was thick with yesteryears' (maybe just yesterday's or maybe from lunch just now) sizzling dishes' fumes absorbed into its wood panelling and floorboards. The decoration had not changed at all, neither had the low dim lighting. A romantic walk down memory lane? If only the smell ...

We had these in the dark (well, sort of):-

Complimentary Buns & Butter. Are you one of those who just swipe a thin layer of butter unto the bun? Yours truly belongs steadfastly to the gluttons who slap the whole slab in. Cold salty butter melting in warm bun. Delicious. Not healthy? We compensated by having only warm plain water. Good diet balancing huh. =P
Tomyam. Quite an odd order in a western restaurant setting and not for dipping buns in either. But how to ignore cravings? Not bad. Not hot (as in chili hot) enough though. For me (a cilipadi - birds' eye chilie fan,) that is.Cheese Baked Fish. Flavourful but it got a bit watery towards the end.Chicken Maryland. Not outstanding but Phitoy enjoyed it. I enjoyed the fried banana in batter.Still serving the best steaks in town? Do tell if you know.

A satisfactory meal nonetheless. Anyone can tell from the smell on our clothes, hair, skin, bag of shuttlecocks...

Toilet post#14

Oh, look at that! Double posts on the same day (yesterday 10/05/2007). Talk about rushing to catch up! Definitely a first in this blog. Unintentionally though. I didn't realise my accomplice, Fezzaboy, had posted until I hit the publish button. But, all the better for you, right?

Am I on a roll or am I on a roll! On a toilet roll, that is. Hmm.. doesn't sound quite right, huh.

Neverthless let's appreciate the fact that I'm playing catch-up. As promised. That is, if any of you care. =P

In my previous visit to Umbai Jetty for seafood, I did visit the stall's toilet before the long drive back to Kuala Lumpur. Confidently (ahem) without much reservations, I went in. Why so confident, you ask, since most public toilets in our beloved country are quite notorious with capital EWWWSSS?

Well, this wall just before the entrance to the toilets:-

In English :- Make sure toilets always clean.

Hey, such a prominent reminder to all users should prompt all to be more civic-minded, right? Afterall, we are moving towards becoming a 1st class developed country.

Verdict:-
1 room for each sex. Spacious. Bright. No extreme unpleasant smell. Squat no throne. Empty toilet rolls (expected). Wet floor but no puddles.

Many claps for the reasonable upkeep of this facility especially during such peak periods with heavy human traffic. A tight slap to a female elder who left a soiled diaper on the shelf. Sheesh.

Toilet post#13

Well well well finally my dear 'ole monstrosity excuse of a pc graciously allows humble me to post pictures without shutting down unexpectedly. Phew.

This will be either like an anniversary celebration or a refresher post since everyone (and I do mean everyone) had done it. So, in the true spirit of satisfying our first thought (FOOOOOOOD, what else?) and curious minds, let's just hijack all the following posts for great photos of glorious food and gorgeous bloggers (this, mostly peek-a-boos. Otherwise, more salivation will be at them than on food).

I was late. Very late. (Yeah, like this post.) Whoa! The restaurant was filled to the brim - bodies, noise, heat.My take on the Klue's ESVP event on 27th April 2007?

W A H L A U - E H !!!! The bunch of Floggers (Food bloggers) were way cool, mien. Oh, so were the non-Floggers or even total non-Bloggers! Even the gift bag (aiks, forgot to take picture), chocolate (many decides it looked like a condom pack) and free-flow of premium happy juice paled in comparison to the warmth of the people there. Funnily, it actually felt more like a re-union rather then a first meeting! Food? Hmm.. I'll take Nigel's word for it.

Special thanks to:-
Boolicious for organising & including me in such a memorable event, Nigel for the special treat of your delicious after dinner aka Session 2 Cheese & Choc cake and Adly, for the autographed Foodster Guide. It did come in handy. Tell you in my later post.

My most FAQ of the night :- Second utmost thought ie why the fascination with toilets. Well, why not? Most times we don't patronise a place just for food. At least not just to stuff everything in, pay and leave. We may go for the ambience, the service or even the staff/other patrons? We tend to linger, right? After good food and much drinks, we will need to visit the 'little room', right? Personally, I always dread such visits. Quite scary and unpredictable, I'll say. Stressful, even. So, this is my little contribution towards recognising the unsung effort extended to these little spaces of comfort.

So,
Sandias (Mexican - NOT TexMex - Restaurant), let's feature yours, ok?

Restoran Onn Kee (Tauge Ayam)

Well, the signboard also reads, Ibu Pejabat (berhawa dingin). Put simply, this place has got a loooong name and history. Many say the neighbouring "Low Wong" is better but it's only opened from 5pm if i'm not wrong.

Coming down from Camerons, we decided to stop by at Ipoh for lunch after a lengthy drive (thanks to the traffic stopages along the roads). Allow me to vent some of my frustration here...

The roads in Cameron Highlands are already narrow and yet, people just seem to find it convenient to park their big holiday-use MPVs by the side of the road, making it extremely hazardous for cars to pass through and pedestrians. True, some areas are wide enough for cars to be parked by the side, but in areas where you can't, then don't do so lar... really self centered.... grrrr...

So, what's famous in Ipoh? Pretty girls, hor fun (kuey teow) and nga choi kai (tauge ayam). I can probably attest to all of that by now and my recent experience at Onn Kee can only substantiate this claim better. When we arrived, this place was already pretty packed with customers and we had to wait for tables; i hate doing this but i'm afraid i cannot afford not to do so. Fortunately, 2 tables were cleared after 15 minutes and we got our seats. We all had kuey teow soup, bean sprouts and the infamous chicken.

The chickens, already cooked, were placed in a big pail as the speed in which they were sold made it unnecessary for the mandatory hung-under-spotlight treatment. Amazing. On the wall, you'll see pictures taken by the owner of the restaurant together with celebrities, notably Chan Kong and Bobby Au Yong from Hong Kong.

We had to wait almost an hour for our food to arrive, and like many other patrons who have enquired with the "order taking lady", we were shunted in return, with her SWEET voice advising us, "You'll have to wait lor, if cannot wait, I also cannot help you"... We actually wanted to order an additional 2 more bowls in case the kuey teow is not enough, but after our encounter with her, we dare not liao. Anyway, the food arrived later and since the waiter had two extra bowls of kuey teow on his tray, we asked him for it and he gave it to us. Of course, we paid for it alsolar...

Here are ze pictures:

Ze Kuey Teow Soup...... very fine kuey teow strips.. lovely texture

Ze chicken... i love the soya sauce based gravy...

The bean sprouts... samelar.. crunchy and not too soft..

Ended up with 2 bowls of kuey teow soup in my tummy.

Price: Unknown as it was someone else's treat.... hehe

Dorae Garden in Hartamas.

Korean food, something that I'll always enjoy not just because of its variety but also its exquisite taste. I first worshipped Jap food when i was 12 but i was never willing to try Korean because they ate dogs during winter... and i LOVE DOGS! So here i was in Dorae Garden, located in Sri Hartamas, on the same row as Maybank, just before the fire station. Dorae Garden is on the 1st and 2nd floors of the unit and hence, you've got to look for the sign on the doors next to the ground units. It seems that this restaurant is often full during weekends and reservation is a must to ensure your dining experience here.

There were 6 of us in total, 5 big eaters and the other, of a medium scale. We ordered 3 barbeque sets, 2 pork and 1 beef and a large serving of the spicy kim chi noodle after our mains. First came the sides, made up of anchovies, spinach, kim chi, 'balitong' snails, steamed fish, bean sprouts and etc. And because these are free of charge when you order the barbeque sets, i think we kinda finished the first round of the sides within 15 minutes or so.

The 'balitong' was nice and sweet but to me, it was kinda weird having it with the Korean dishes. From my Korean dining experiences, this was a first for me.
See my chopstick? It's diggin on the mayo-like vege... superb! Went well with the rice alongside the chili paste and the raw garlic pieces below.
The garlic pieces were meant to be eaten with the lettuce, salted sesame oil, the chili paste and the BBQ-ed meat but you know lar Malaysians, anything oso can one.

This was the spiced up spring onion and cucumber, sweet and spicy, a bit like our "achar", another one of those dishes that you can finish by yourself.
Wanna guess this is? It's a piece of steamed fish with sweet chili paste on it.. reminds me of our "cheong ching" fish. Thing is, it was served cold....cold sashimi is my favourite but this will take quite a lot to get used to.
The first meat we had, beef; lightly marinated and was nicely done. I thought they brought out the wrong meat coz we ordered some specially marinated beef but the waiter assured us that it is the right one.... When it was done and served, one bite was all it takes to mesmerize us. You've really got to savour its lovely texture and taste. Sweeeeet.... this one's better than the Nobu, MNI.
The 2nd meat arrived, pork. This was highly recommended by my friend who frequents this place pretty often and it does, resemble the infamous roast pork so many of us adore.
Fancy some bacon? This certainly had what it takes to take on my all time favourite brekkie meat. It was quite unpleasant upon first sight, looking at the layers of fat on the top half of the strips but i kept telling myself, "i'm gonna double my time and effort on the U-Zap". Soft on the inside, topped with its crispy skin, this was my favourite. Thankfully they served this last. Indeed a meat to savour.
We rounded things up with a nice hot wok of kim chi noodles served on a portable gas stove and though it looked devastatingly hot, it isn't actually. It had pieces of tofu, kim chi, pork, crabstick-sized chewy flour and instant noodles. Yup, you read it right, instant noodles that were suprisingly chewy despite spending more than 10 minutes in the bubling hot wok. the gravy clinched it for me, thick and reasonably spicy... very "kau"....
And the aftermath.......
