Rumah Makan Ikan Bakar Cianjur, Jakarta Indonesia

Last Sept'08 trip, thanks to Datuk K, I was introduced to a most scenic Sundanese restaurant.

On my 2nd trip, with
Sir V as our makan guide, I tasted a Solonese yummy specialty. Sir V insisted we should have this for our final dinner during that trip. It was late, almost 9pm (10pm in Malaysia) so he called ahead to enquire whether the restaurant’s specialty was still available. Foodies Star was shining on us. Brightly. Why dine so late, you ask? All because Mr V had us bodily (wo)manhandled for 1 1/2 hours. Ahhh bliss.

Now back to food.
Nasi Liwet. Served in an unassuming stainless steel pot. When Sir V lifted the lid, we were unprepared for the aromatic waft. Imagine the smell. Freshly boiled rice in coconut milk (not quite unlike our Nasi Lemak yet not as heavily infused) enveloping the topping of stir fried dried shrimps and salty anchovies (hopefully I decipher the ingredients correct) with garlic, onions and chilies. *wipe drool*

Bill which tourists (we we we) did not pay:-

Address on bill:

Our dear Sir V

And that concludes my Jakarta (2nd trip) posts. *sigh*

For now. *sigh* I suspect
there are still posts lurking somewhere in my hard drive but hey, that's discovery for another day. =-D

Revisited Rumah Makan Pondok Laguna, Jakarta Indonesia

Selba, this Malaysian friend of mine also brought us here. Guess you were right about it being an expat haunt. =D For those confused and curious, do click here to salivate at the food I savoured on my maiden visit and Selba's comment.

The revisit allowed me to savour my favourites again. They are the restaurant's bestsellers, obviously. Every table orders them.

I had a fabulous holiday!

Tahu Kipas (Fresh shrimps fried in batter)
Ikan Gurame aka Dancing Fish (Deep fried fresh water fish)
Cumi-cumi Bakar (Grilled Squid). Steadfastly my ultimate favourite!
Sambal kangkung (Spicy stirfried greens)
New dishes (to me) were:-

Kepiting (Crab) err cannot remember type of cooking. Local meat crab slathered in a spicy sweet sour sauce. Just cannot stop licking the shell.
Sambal Kacang Buncis (Spicy stirfried long beans). Forgettable.
All good to go with this pungent salivacious Sambal Belacan. Serving equivalent to a sauce plate.
Tried to diffused the fiery food with Fresh Young Coconut Water.Companions recommended to enhanced the drinks with a squeeze of lime. Somehow, I'm not taken with it. Tasted odd to me.
Bill: Sir V bought. Did I say I had a fabulous holiday?

Medan Curry Bihun / Vermicelli, Pluit, Jakarta

Ahem. Time to wake up my hibernating Jakarta posts. =D

Last Sept '08, Phitoy and I crashed at his buddy's Superb Host. Come Feb'09, 2 Shopping Qs and I took our buddy, Magnanimous Host to task.

Friends.

Friends abroad.

You cannot live with them, you cannot enjoy subsidised holiday (stay eat and travel) without them.

*sigh contentedly*
His toothpaste squished, towels soiled, bolsters flattened and yet he treated us delicious meals. *sigh contentedly again* Ahh our dearest Sir V the Magnanimous Host, you do have such admirable high tolerance level. With 3 relatively loud females. *Bow very low*

On our first morning in Jakarta, Sir V recommended we try one of his favourite noodle stall in the Pluit area. Since the stall opens late morning and Sir V mentioned it was in the neighbourhood, we took our time to leave for breakfast. And what do you know, the neighbourhood was an hour away. *faint* It was a weekday and we were forced to join the city's all hours traffic madness. *got up to faint again .. from hunger*

Curry Bihun with pieces of Chicken, Potatos and Red Cubes (in morbid reality, Coagulated Blood). Yummy without the sambal / chilli paste provided.Compared to most bowls of noodles served back in Malaysia, we find the noodles portion a tad small.

Price : Think it was IDR15,000 (RM5.00) per bowl.

Location: Well, In Pluit. =P Shop front looked like this. Opposite it, this.
Notes to order hot drinks (ie difference between Indonesia and Malaysia):-
Teh or Kopi in Indonesia
= Teh O or Kopi O in Malaysia (Ceylon/English Tea or Coffee with sugar)
Teh Susu or Kopi Susu in Indonesia
= Teh in Malaysia (Ceylon/English Tea or coffee with sugar & cream/condensed milk)

Warung Laos, Bandung, Indonesia

Braving the congested traffic in a slight drizzle, we stumbled upon a cosy Italian cafe right smack in the middle of the busy Cihampelas bargain street.Simple set-up, ran by locals, noisy. We were sceptical of the food quality so we decided to order just a few dishes good enough to tide us over until dinner time.Morale of the forthcoming story is NEVER ever judge a restaurant by what is playing on its blurry 21" box television (it was airing a rowdy local concert obviously held in an open field somewhere in the city).

Generous ingredients, attractive presentation, 2 thumbs up tasty! Potato Skins with Sausage Ommelette
In Indonesia, noticed that beef is the default meat, not chicken like on our shores. Please specify your preference if you are non-beef consumer like my friends. Else, a beef fan like me, be prepared to gag on the quantity. Lucky it was good though oily when cool.

Pollo Laos Pizza. He who does not drool at it is err blind? And err what do you call a smelling handicap?
Spaghetti Olio Ogeo. So simple yet so flavourful. Oops picture shows small portion due to the dish was forksfully attacked before it was wrestled away to capture a decent picture.
Bill:
The staff was unable to find me a namecard on that day so hopefully the address on the bill helps.
Shopfront looked like this:
Opposite it, this:
(shy) Shopping Qs and I.Note the small pot of syrup? Realising that we lack the powess of the locals' sweeter tooth, we got into the habit of asking for our drinks and syrup to be served separately throughout our trip in Indonesia.
Ahhh no work day with good food .. ahhhh...

TORA BIKA Cappucino (extra choco granule) Indonesia

An instant drink product of Jakarta. Smooth, creamy and surprisingly, not overly sweet like most drinks I tried in Jakarta. What attracted me was the separate small sachet of coco powder attached to each individual coffee packet for a fragrant mug of buzz.Doesn't it look good?
Was excited to share around but Nescafe fans gave me sour looks. Claimed it's way too mild. Oh well. Less men more share. =D

A trivia about my trip:-

The major difference this time around compared to my previous trip, I was with 2 of my Shopping Queen pals. Naturally, other than cruising boutiques (imported branded attire is more expensive there than Hong Kong and Singapore), we covered 2 supermarkets and 1 hypermarket. Yes, 'si-lai' (ie homemaker) stuff. Discovered certain brands (groceries and toiletries) were relatively cheaper compared to our Bolehland. Hey, even similar brands carry wider range of products and in better packaging. Among the 3 of us, we 'imported' Pantene, Garnier, Laurier, Johnson & Johnson, Dettol, Salonpas and handy packets of fruit juice. =P

Kampung Daun Restaurant, Bandung Indonesia

Mention Bandung, first thot, shopping. Most would identify with these billboards when mention Bandung. No, we didn’t shop here. We were caught in a slow traffic so we photographed from the car. Datuk K and Angel S brought us shopping at another swanky neighbourhood with big air-conditioned complexes. No, I don’t know where and was too excited to snap photos. (-_-)”. Only know I bought pajamas, blouses, hair accessories and earrings at good prices. =D

Then, comes eating.

An uphill drive to Datuk K’s favourite restaurant there.

It was quite a distance away from the bustling shopping area. Nothing prepared us for the onslaught of nature at this place. With a name literally translated as Leaf Village Restaurant, you would have thot we should not be too surprised with this:-

Small group?
A busload?
Obviously our chosen little hut was not air-conditioned. So Phitoy, you ok?
Oh, know what to do with this hanging by the hut's entrance?
Whack it for service, of course!
Lazily we fed on (hopefully I got them right):-

Iced Kelapa Muda (Young Coconut), Strawberry Juice (in Pink) and Vanilla Latte
Bakwan Jagung (Corn Fritters). Good to eat when served piping hot.
Sup Buntut Goreng set. Set means it came with rice, soup and beef. Err buntut is backside aka butt in Malay, no? Datuk K told us dont' ask, eat. Oooo buntut is meaty and juicy.
Ayam Bakar Bumbu Bali. Somewhat like Spicy Grilled or BBQ Chicken. Fingers licking good.
Ayam Panggang Madu (Grilled or Honeyed BBQ Chicken). Oh my oh my!
Gurame Bakar (Crunchy Fried Fish). Droolicious!
Credit must be given to the various sambal pastes that came with the dishes. Hot yummy stuff!

Magnanimous Datuk K bought us (again):- Website: http://kampungdaun.net/
