New Paris Restaurant Sdn Bhd, SS2

This was my last visit there sometime end of last year. I did thought of not posting this until recently, I heard a couple of friends had similar experiences. Not a good thing especially for an old favourite restaurant which had just moved to a much bigger and comfortable location. Guess it is another case of when business expands, quality deteriorates. =(

Our dinner for 6 was steamed white rice with:-

Fried Calamari. A hint of curry powder but was more flour than squids (Squids flavoured flourballs?). Unfortunately, that was considered the winning dish of that night. *sigh*
Watermelon Chicken. I think you can only get this special dish here. Nice presentation. Tastewise, the chicken pieces tasted a bit too 'chicken-y' for us. Hope you can understand that as I really cannot explain it any other way. Unpleasant. We agreed it would so much better if pork ribs were used instead.
Ginger Wine Lala. Succulent crustaceans but with 'oversweet' soup. So sweet it can almost qualify for 'thong-sui' - sweet dessert. Picture is just my own small bowl.
Beancurd topped with 'Choy-Pou'. Smooth beancurd but somehow quite tasteless eventhough the topping was generous. Maybe our tastebuds were overwhelmed by the sweet soup lala.Stir-fried Kailan. Bitter.
Did we ordered the wrong dishes?

Reluctantly settled:-Address & contact:-I would appreciate if anyone had a very different experience to tell. My friends and I may be convinced that ours were exceptional cases and give it another try. Afterall, the crowd there is incredible every night!

Duh... if this case happened to me, I'll go for another round somewhere else even if I'm full! Btw, the lala seem kinda bigger in size.

tummythoz,
The watermelon chicken looks new to me. It's actually just sweet and sour chicken in a "watermelon bowl" right? Kailan should be fried with a bit of ginger and beef. Then it'll be super delicious. haha!

haven't eaten there before, but looking at your review, I probably won't try it! Maybe they got new cooks huh?

Yes, the calamari is nicest dish here but the rest of the dishes are just okay. The other two dishes which aren't too bad are the kung po har ko (mantis prawn) and also the si yau har lok (prawns with soya sauce). I also find the champagne chicken tasting too chicken-y. I know what you mean, he he....we only come here when we want a superfast lunch/dinner as service is quick from beginning till the end.

jason, we did. We went for the safest bet then - Mamak! Oh, think the lala's size is visually enhanced by the small individual bowl. U want huge delicious food to grab you? Go visit wmw's blog!

kok, it's somewhat like lemon chicken except watermelon is used instead. I'll vote lemon chicken from now on! Do fed-ex some of your kailan over please.

lyrical lemongrass, wmw just listed a couple of dishes I did not do that sad evening. Go try and tell me.

wmw, *memorising the dishes*. Y'know, just in case somebody is buying me there in the near future.

Agreed! Ever since they moved to the shoplot, I tried twice and truly disappointed. So now i never bother coming back, especially seeing the long queue for such lousy food turns me off!

ya, i think the food serve during the good old-shack days were better..

tummythoz,
Water melon is being used instead ah? That'll be somewhat too sweet eh? Kailan here almost the same as M'sia I suppose. Only that, the cooking style is different.

Ginger Wine lala, this is something new...I must try, but you said sweet...at a glance, your bowl does look like thong sui...hehe.

Sorry, can't say much abt the food here as I think I've only eaten here twice - once at the shack and once at the shoplot. Places tend to drop in quality std once they expand, sad as the new cooks are just not up to standard.

Tummythoz said...

precious pea, guess that was really my LAST time too.

jackson, guess our tastes differ or maybe u managed to eat on their 'good day'.

sc, sad huh.

kok, most Chinese restaurants serve kailan stir-fired with siew-yok or prawns (smaller than d 'shrimps' in melting wok's recipes) or in mix vegetables. So far have not come across one that do it with beef. Then again most 'tai-chows' here don't serve beef.

melting wok, come come. Hey, fatboybakes, if you r here, want to coincide your pot luck with this celebrity's arrival?

rasa malaysia, it's quite a common dish here. But not this sweet-lar. Think even d cooked shellfish got diabetic.

boo_licious, happens too when business is passed to the later generation. *sigh*

tummythoz,
I never tried kai lan with siu yok. With pork I tried before. That's the most common combination. You should tried it with beef. The beef somehow brings out a special taste. Yea, some don't serve beef. But you can try it yourself at home. hehe

kampungboycitygirl, read your previous favourable review on this restaurant. So, how is this time around?

tankiasu said...

My New Paris' experiences were basically pretty much the same as yours. Nothing special with this eatery anymore. Prices also went up a lil. Hardly go there anymore.

Tummythoz said...

tankiasu, sad rite. Then again, there r so many new makan places sprouting everywhere everyday!

Maryanne said...

Been there many times and thought the food and price is good until I saw this thing.

A lot of ppl order champagne chicken with watermenon, did you know a lot of table with left over either watermelon or chicken. What would the staff do ??? They mix to a new plate, pour and serve as new and charge to us. (My son saw these as he was purging and frequently stroll to toilet and saw this).

On our table the champagne chicken is too hard to chew and tasteless.

We have two table and 3 big pot of rice can't cater for us and we ask for 4 pot of rice. (Only two woman in this two table, all of them are my brother in law family or my family). Eventually the lady boss charge us RM20 per pot of rice. And since they charge us so high, I took my container to fill in the rest of the left over rice (for my dog) and the lady boss charge me for extra RM5. She mention if I didn't ta pao, she would take the pot of rice for fried rice purpose. And when I ask her, When she charge RM20 per pot of rice, what mistake do I have to ta pao. She mention that she is the owner, she can charge according to her liking. Which make all my family member "boycot" this restaurant in our future visit.

After paying the bill, my husband bump to his old friend with his family and tell them about our experience and exchange the receipt, and this restaurant charge different on rice as they charge RM1.20 per head of rice to his old friend bill.
