Sin Eng Heong Kaya Puff, Ipoh
It was a long Raya weekend. Other than this, I managed to tick off another item from my As-Flogger-to-do-list that is to check out Kayakok’s fervent claim.
Upon entering Ipoh, I interrupted Kayakok’s afternoon (siesta-ing?). Hello hello so where’s the world’s best of the best Kaya Puff shop? Same row as Foh San Dimsum Restaurant? Signboard in bright yellow?
Trust me. Its exterior looks much more impressive than its interior except for the waft of freshly baked puffs.
Only 2 customers were in before us. One was juggling to carry off 15 boxes while another was waiting for 60 pieces of Kaya Puffs to be packed! Then another elderly lady rushed in to remind the shopkeepers that her order of 150 pieces should be ready for collection later in the evening and another 100 the next morning. While we stood there gawking, the phone rang. Another order for an obscene number of Kaya Puff. And rang. Another order. And rang. Another order. Lucky for us shop is not big so the shopkeeper noticed us. Automatically he asked for the name our order was. Huh? Walk-in get to buy? Yes but strictly 5 pieces only. We grabbed.
Cost:- RM 3.50 for 5 pieces
Namecard:- MUST order minimum 1 day in advance. It was a blistering afternoon but for the world’s best of the best Soya Bean Curd and Drink, we braved the scorching sun and dashed across 2 streets to Funny Mountain Soya Bean stall. Only to be greeted by this:-
No, we did not join the queue. We have outdone our waiting for the day. We just bought cold mineral water from a shop nearby and drove off.
Kayakok advised to eat them fresh. We only did it 3 hours later when we arrived at our destination and shared them with a couple of family members. Crumbly crust, fragrant and moderately sweet coconut & egg jam. We SHOULD had had them in the privacy of the car during the journey. Less squabbling for remaining pieces.

This is the commercialized version I think, there used to be another shop near the Kg Simee market.
Kaya kok is one of the best here, so I've heard:)
eh, so fast increased to 70 cents liao? *_*
hmmm ... luckily you managed to find this place.
I don't quite fancy kayakok either but my dad love it. Must be good since people order by hundred!
woah, the funny mountain drink would have completed your snacky snack hor....
back in kl, tong kee's kayakok is pretty good as well, me thinkz.
Thanks for the number. No need to be restricted to 5 pieces liao.
Gosh, I'm ipoh-mali yet has never tried this! The prob with most ipoh-famous snacks (eg heong paeng) is that u MUST pre-order, especially during a long weekend or public holiday becos that's when the outstationers swarm the places and buy by the hundreds!
cumi&ciki & precious pea, my parents, siblings and all extension of family members are into kaya puff but not me. Wonder why.
Ooh they demand to have the same each time I pass Ipoh from now on.
kayakok, you read what christy said? Sounds like a challenge to your fav shop.
nic(khkl), the sweaty crowd was not funny-lo.
Whenever in Tong Kee, my tunnel vision comes on - eggtart eggtart eggtart. =P

*Ipoh Mali jatuh ke tangga ke-lima minggu ini*
thenomadgourmand, each is about a small palm size. Very filling. Your size (by assumption) can do 2 max. =)
Cepat-cepat tahan Ipoh Mali. Waa macam ada berat sikit-ya. Hebat gym-ya?
Ya..I am Ipoh people bt never tried that until a colleague asked me to buy a box for him. I went there but a shop lady told me it was sold out. Then at evening time, i called for a booking for 2 boxes and she asked me when do i need to collect, i said tomolo 9-10am. Then on Sunday morning I went there, in front on my queue, there was a lady wanted to buy kaya puff but a shop lady told her that have to wait as kaya puff were not cooked. Then i told the shop lady that i have booked for 2 boxes(meaning i come to collect right?). She just looked at me and continued to pack other stuff for the rest of the customers. Then I reminded her again that i come to collect my kaya puff. SHIT!!! she just ignored me! Then I left in frustration. One hour later, I called back and asked if my booking ready to collect. A person on the line just told me it was ready, loud and clear asked me when can I come to collect??!!! Damp Shit!!!! I fxxx her that i just came and your ppl just ignoring me!!!
SO??? what do i learnt and what i need to share??
In this world, if we have spending power, we can look for whatever better food in hamper places.. why need to "spend our $$ buying frustration"???
This shop gave me a very strong impression that "Well... I am famous, if u want to come, come but I just dun like to serve you!!!"
Poor Anony Monday May18. Actually friends just bought from that shop 2 wks back. They were offered to try other freshly baked goodies.
Must be an errant staff. If oni you've caught that lady's pic. Then can help me make this blog more intersting!
