Foong Foong Restaurant (YTF), Ampang New Village
Beancurds and vegetables stuffed with fishpaste is one of the few rare food outside Penang that my parents (true blue Penangites) truly enjoy. There are 2 types of food over here in the city which they appreciate most - yong tau fu and dimsum. I was brought up to believe that the Hakka clan does the former best while the Cantonese masters the latter. Both clans do form the majority here, right?
This is one of their default eating place in Kuala Lumpur over the years. A tremendously well-known shop locally as well as internationally, among fish fans or otherwise. Since it's almost like a neighbourhood haunt, I did not think of posting until today. Like I mentioned before, I'm missing my camera so no new pictures. These were taken couple of months ago.
On a public holiday Phitoy and I went there for a simple and light late lunch. As the clock in the background showed, it was almost 3pm in the afternoon. Crowd was thinning but still had the staff running around.I went to the counter where a young man with one microphone in one hand and a pen in another to order. I mentioned our table number and just said I want a plate of 10 pieces of mixed Yong Tau Fu minus brinjal and bitter gourd. Though they are Phitoy's favourite, I do not like both. Since he insisted I order, so there. I asked for my favourite instead - 3 Fried Dumplings. *big grin with both hands showing the V sign*
You can hear your order boom across the floor to the other side where the open concept kitchen is. But in their homebrand jargon, of course.
In a couple of minutes, these appeared:-
One plate held 10 mouthwatering pieces consisting of stuffed green lady fingers, red chillies, white beancurds and fishballs in gravy while another had 3 hot crunchy outside savoury soft stuffing inside brown fried dumplings.
The small plate here held the requisite sauces (reddish is chillie while the darker is just sweet) to dip the pieces in. Both of us had a Chinese herbal drink (I cannot remember which type) each but only phitoy took rice. I was saving for dinner. Click to see what it was and you'll understand why.

Worth the saving for dinner. :) Haven't had Yong Taufu for ages. Wah got to make myself a list of food I need to fill my stomach with when I'm back in Singapore.

my boss love this place. everytime also suggest this place for makan. still like the one in PJ in restaurant O&S
Been awhile since I went there. It's kinda far away from the city centre, so must wait for friday 2 hr lunch to go there. I find the mic and loudspeaker fascinating.
Last time I was here was back like 9 years ago...It's been awhile..."sings...Memories..." :o) now hardly go to that area.

If I remember correctly, they call out the orders in Hakka. Hahaha..The guy that does the YTF at O&S restaurant in PJ either used to work there or is a relative. *sigh* comes with agelah..starting to forget things..
Wah got service tax liau now? How about the next door's Ochard View? Also got tax?
brings back memories..those days..ordering 50-100 pieces from the counter seems normal..when ytf was dirt cheap..the noisy microphones r cute!..
theres stx because the threshold is RM300k..so i guess they r earning at least tat amt yearly..

Actually there could be maggots and worms and whatnot in any meat or veges... ain't nothing stopping me from my fried brinjal yong tau foo... Yums... :d

I have my yong tau hu in soup one leh. How come yours is dry one ah?
Well, fong fong will always on my top list. Strangely my craving for fong fong's ampang young tau foo is just a pregnant woman craving for food. I can eat 15 pieces alone. My favourite is their fried sui kow, foo chok kuin and stuffed brinjal. Tasted the serdang ones but nothing near fong fong. There is one new hakka yeong tau foo at bangsar which is not bad, I personally luv their chu keok choh.
Yeah, it's going to be a long long list because it has been more than a year since I'm back home. Funnily once I'm home, the craving for these food stops :p and I forgot about them till I'm back in France again, then I start craving for them again.
Haahaha...worth saving for such great dinner. Slurps...salivating at Max's food oledi.
Many good YTF shops mushrooming around, but this Foong Foong sure stand out among those, although not necessary the best, anymore.
Ah, the elusive Foong Foong which was closed during CNY for almost a mth. Once in a while, a drive down to Ampang is a good idea for this version. It's different from the Serdang or Seri Kembangan type which is more Hakka like in terms of their rough size.
hahaha, silly me, I have not read a MY receipt in ages, thought the tax was 12.90 same as the sub total hiaks :P Anyway, its like RM$1+/piece, quite expensive leh. Is it more expensive to make them yourself ?

meltingwok, it's RM0.70 per piece, I think. The balance is for drinks & a plate of steamed white rice. Most prob homemade will cost less but then again, very troublesome if only for a few pieces.
seriously, can't find good yong tau foo in Penang....
you know what ah... my boss suggested we go to foong foong again next week for a farewell... AGAINNNN.

OMG, my favorite yong tau foo restaurant...geez...I missed savoring them the last two times when I was in KL...and I used to eat there almost every weekend when in college. Sigh sigh. I really hope I could scratch and eat. :( :(
