The Ship, Pertama Complex

It was a rainy evening with promise of flooding in certain unfortunate areas around our Garden City of Lights. But since Phitoy insisted he needs to replenish his supply of shuttlecocks (no, not a dealer, just a player who's super particular about the condition of all the contraptions of the game involved), we went to his usual sport shop, housed in Pertama Complex. When we were done, found that the sky was just beginning to throw a huge tantrum and traffic was horrendous. What to do? Do dinner-lor.

Long time never been in any of its branches so we thought it's a good time to revisit The Ship. Upon entering, we decided it is prime time they refurbish and renovate. The air was thick with yesteryears' (maybe just yesterday's or maybe from lunch just now) sizzling dishes' fumes absorbed into its wood panelling and floorboards. The decoration had not changed at all, neither had the low dim lighting. A romantic walk down memory lane? If only the smell ...

We had these in the dark (well, sort of):-

Complimentary Buns & Butter. Are you one of those who just swipe a thin layer of butter unto the bun? Yours truly belongs steadfastly to the gluttons who slap the whole slab in. Cold salty butter melting in warm bun. Delicious. Not healthy? We compensated by having only warm plain water. Good diet balancing huh. =P
Tomyam. Quite an odd order in a western restaurant setting and not for dipping buns in either. But how to ignore cravings? Not bad. Not hot (as in chili hot) enough though. For me (a cilipadi - birds' eye chilie fan,) that is.Cheese Baked Fish. Flavourful but it got a bit watery towards the end.Chicken Maryland. Not outstanding but Phitoy enjoyed it. I enjoyed the fried banana in batter.Still serving the best steaks in town? Do tell if you know.

A satisfactory meal nonetheless. Anyone can tell from the smell on our clothes, hair, skin, bag of shuttlecocks...

Our bill:-The contact & location:-Restoran The Ship Pertama Complex.

I did once at VS's branch along Jalan Ampang. Bad choice. Miniscule unfresh prawns. Blek.

Gotta give 'em credit for lasting so many years. The last time I went there was about 15 years back. Don't recall seeing tom yam on their menu!

Classic but seems normal to me. Reminds me of Miner's Arm in Ipoh.

lyrical lemongrass, think my last visit before this was almost that long ago too. A friend who went with me that time was still single & looking. Today, he's a father of 2!

wmw, I've been to both before. Seen their shows too!

jason, In my much younger days, whenever I visit Ipoh and was on my best behaviour, I'll be rewarded at a western joint near a field, opp the Teachers's Association or something, for chicken chop. I do not know the name though. Know where's that?

jackson, it was not too bad. It was more of the stagnant air that put us off.

kok, that's their tagline-ma.

joe, during my childhood days, it was always a treat to have western food .. other than KFC & McD.

sc, like d foodcourt in d EPF building huh.

Tummy, The Ship at Sultan Ismail is currently our default dept lunch venue as our good ol' Ah Wee enjoys it more than Ah Peen's Carmen's.

The Ship at Sultan Ismail will always have a special place in my heart for it was the first time i've ever had steak in my life. My dad took me there as i kept pestering him after seeing people having steak on tv... i tried their infamous sizzling steak and have never failed enjoying it even until today.

Their outlets are just too gloomy and dark insidelar.. and i can't agree more with all of you on the 'smell' in their outlets. Kudos for maintaining the consistency for so long in ALL outlets.. or maybe they have their very own "The Ship" scent supplied by Ambi Pur....

Yea, a very nostalgic place for most of us here in KL I bet.

I last visited them about 3 years ago. Their escargots are still one of the best I've tasted. Any other different opinion on this?

fezzaboy, I, too, had my first sizzling steak at one of The Ship's branch. That time felt very grand & exciting-lor.

tankiasu, I am not really a fan of snails. Still need to brace myself before picking at those shells.

xiu long bao, once upon a time it was known as high class. Now, mid class maybe?

tankiasu,

It's been a long long while since i last had escargots in The Ship. My latest experience though, was at Monte's in BSC. Pretty good if you fancy it, but the garlic and butter was a tad too strong the second time i had it there.

meiyen, I remember your post. That's way I skipped it, just in case. That used to be my default order.

jason, no-ar? My next trip to Ipoh, I'll make sure to revisit it. That is, if I can find or recognise it. Hopefully it's still in business.
